Mills College
Senior Research Scientist
Catherine Lewis, PhD, comes from four generations of public school teachers. Her video and print materials have introduced many educators to Lesson Study (LS; www.lessonresearch.net ). She has directed a series of federally funded grants to improve and research LS, establishing that it can improve both students’ and teachers’ mathematical learning and arguing that LS is a form of improvement science. A federally funded review identified her work as one of only two professional learning interventions (of 643 reviewed) to meet scientific criteria and positively impact students’ mathematical proficiency.

Lewis speaks and reads Japanese, published the earliest English-language accounts of Japanese LS, and has published her research in such leading peer-reviewed journals as Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and Educational Researcher. She has served as an advisor to sites where teachers have sustained LS for 10 or more years. Lewis has hosted national and international conferences that have attracted capacity groups of educators for public research lessons in California schools.
