Hillary Freeman

The Nueva School
Dean of Student Life, Grades 5-12
Since joining Nueva in 2005 as a biology and chemistry teacher, Hillary has willingly taken leadership roles on a variety of programs and projects in the Middle and Upper Schools. Her current focus is on the Upper School as the director of internships, ninth-grade dean, and ninth-grade advisor, and she participates in upper school faculty hiring. She also plays a significant role on the ninth-grade admissions team and leads the scaling and curricular development of most of the upper school international trips. From the onset, she has brought real-world science into the Nueva classroom. Before devoting herself to teaching, Hillary worked for the US Navy and the National Marine Fisheries Service, was a programmer and later an executive at SAS software, and trained extensively in conflict management, team building, and diversity. She was elected to and served on the Palo Alto City Council and taught math and science in the Palo Alto public schools before joining Nueva, where she has worked on the Internship Task Force, Diversity Committee, Dean Team, and Expansion Task Force (planning the new Upper School). Hillary worked together with Kim Saxe to design and develop the inaugural Nueva I-Lab (quite possibly the first innovation lab in the nation at a middle school) and has assisted Kim with the summer Design Thinking Institute.
